Membership Categories at UFAWU

The Uganda Fisheries and Allied Workers' Union (UFAWU) is an inclusive organization that brings together individuals and groups involved in fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing, transportation, marketing, research, and allied industries. To ensure effective participation and representation, the union provides different membership categories designed to accommodate various stakeholders within the sector.

Membership categories allow UFAWU to serve workers and partners at different levels while promoting unity, collaboration, and active participation. Each category provides an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the fisheries industry and to benefit from the programs, activities, and initiatives undertaken by the union. Regardless of category, all members become part of a wider movement dedicated to professional development, worker empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, and sector transformation.

Ordinary Membership

Open to workers directly engaged in fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing, transportation, marketing, and related occupations. Ordinary members form the foundation of the union and actively participate in union activities, meetings, and programs.

Associate Membership

Available to individuals who support the objectives of UFAWU but may not be directly employed within the fisheries sector. Associate members contribute ideas, expertise, and support toward achieving the union's mission.

Youth Membership

Designed for young people entering or preparing to enter the fisheries and allied sectors. This category promotes skills development, mentorship, leadership growth, and active youth participation in industry development.

Women's Membership

Supports the participation and empowerment of women working throughout the fisheries value chain while encouraging gender inclusion, equality, and leadership development.

Professional Membership

Open to professionals such as researchers, trainers, consultants, technicians, and specialists whose expertise contributes to the growth and modernization of the sector.

Institutional Membership

Available to cooperatives, associations, organizations, and groups interested in partnering with UFAWU to advance fisheries development and worker welfare.

Retired Membership

Recognizes former workers and union members who wish to remain connected to the union and continue sharing their experience, knowledge, and mentorship.

Honorary Membership

Awarded to distinguished individuals who have made exceptional contributions to workers, the fisheries sector, or the advancement of the union's objectives.

Choosing the Right Membership Category

UFAWU recognizes the diversity of individuals and organizations involved in the fisheries industry. For this reason, membership categories are designed to ensure that everyone—from workers and youth to professionals and institutions—has an opportunity to participate meaningfully. Each category strengthens the union's ability to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, leadership development, and sustainable growth across the entire fisheries value chain.

Building a Stronger Sector Through Inclusive Membership

By welcoming members from different backgrounds and levels of experience, UFAWU creates a platform where ideas, skills, and experiences can be shared for the benefit of the entire sector. Inclusive membership helps strengthen partnerships, promote innovation, encourage participation, and create opportunities for current and future generations of workers.

Our Membership Philosophy

"A strong union is built on diverse membership, shared values, and a common commitment to growth, opportunity, and sustainable development for all."
