Recognizing the Vital Role of Women in Fisheries

Women play a critical role in Uganda's fisheries sector and are involved in nearly every stage of the fisheries value chain, including fish harvesting, processing, preservation, marketing, transportation, aquaculture, business management, and community development. Their contributions support household incomes, food security, economic growth, and sustainable livelihoods for millions of people.

Despite their significant contribution, many women continue to face challenges such as limited access to resources, financial services, training opportunities, markets, technology, and leadership positions. UFAWU is committed to promoting gender equality, empowering women, and creating opportunities that enable them to participate fully and effectively in the fisheries industry. Through capacity building, advocacy, mentorship, and partnership programs, the union seeks to strengthen the position of women and ensure their voices are heard at all levels of decision-making.

Empowering Women for Sustainable Fisheries Development

Sustainable fisheries development cannot be achieved without the active participation and empowerment of women. UFAWU works with government agencies, development partners, community groups, and private sector stakeholders to create an enabling environment where women can thrive. This includes supporting education, entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership training, and opportunities that enhance women's participation throughout the fisheries value chain.

Breaking Barriers and Creating Opportunities

Many women in fisheries face barriers related to access to resources, information, finance, technology, and leadership opportunities. UFAWU is committed to addressing these challenges by promoting inclusive policies, encouraging stakeholder collaboration, and supporting programs that create pathways for women to succeed. Through collective action and partnership, barriers can be transformed into opportunities for growth and advancement.

Investing in Future Generations of Women Leaders

Empowering today's women creates opportunities for tomorrow's leaders. UFAWU encourages young women to participate actively in fisheries, aquaculture, entrepreneurship, research, and leadership. By investing in education, mentorship, and skills development, the union contributes to building a future where women play an even greater role in shaping the fisheries sector and national development.
